Workshop on Modern Manipuri Songs
A one-day workshop on Modern Manipuri Songs was organised at Thoubal Wangmataba, Thoubal during the month of November, 2024. As many as 35 participants attended the Workshop. During the programme, resource persons shared various problems and prospects of modern Manipuri songs with the emergence of modern musical instruments and tunes mingled with western flavours.
We are planning to make it larger and include more participants. We are planning to held this workshop for more days and try to invite more participants from different communities of Manipur and invite more resource persons.
Seminar on Manipuri Mukna
Mukna is the traditional form of wrestling in Manipur, practiced mainly by the Meitei community. It is a physically intense and culturally significant sport that has been passed down through generations. More than just a game, Mukna is a symbol of strength, discipline, and honor in Manipuri society. More than just a sport, Mukna represents a living heritage that combines physical prowess, ritualistic elements, and community bonding.
A One-day Seminar on Mukna, a Manipuri traditional martial art, was conducted at the WIGC Complex, Thoubal Wangmataba, Thoubal, Manipur in the presence of eminent personalities of art and culture, some Mukna Jatra (old Mukna champions) and many interested attendees.
Workshop on Meitei Pung
Meitei Pung (also called Manipuri Mridang or Pung cholom) is the traditional barrel drum of Manipur and a vital part of the state’s classical and folk music. It is most famously used in Manipuri Ras Leela, Sankirtana, and Lai Haraoba rituals, serving as both a musical instrument and a sacred object in Meitei culture.
A one-day workshop on Meitei Pung was organised at Thoubal Haokha, Thoubal in collaboration with the local clubs. The programme was attended by 28 pung artistes who successfully perform in many ritual ceremonies such as wedding ceremonies, shradha ceremonies, etc. during the workshop, various aspects of Meitei Pung were thoroughly discussed.
Workshop on Manipuri Thang-Ta
Thang-Ta is Manipur's traditional martial art, practiced by the Meitei community, combining the use of the thang (sword) and ta (spear) with unarmed combat techniques. Recognized as one of India's most sophisticated warrior traditions, Thang-Ta embodies Manipur's martial heritage, spiritual philosophy, and cultural identity. Together, Thang-Ta means the art of sword and spear. It is not just a martial practice but also a cultural expression, reflecting the history, spirituality, and bravery of the Manipuri people.
